If you need any preparation for Alaska, you could always try a week on Anglesey! It's about as sparse, I'd guess, and bloody cold to boot! We're actually looking to move back to the North West in the next year and closer to civilisation.
I've got very happy memories of Vancouver. Would love to go back.
